Notes on EOY Lists: 2013

Alternative Press (AP) (10) [link]: basically, hard rock with pop hooks. Only surprise is (1) Twenty One Pilots.

Amazon (100)

American Songwriter (50): top three: Jason Isbell, Patti Griffin, Phosphorescent.

Black Rock Review (20): 12 not on list; number 2 is a 12-24-2012 release, Jack Berry: Heathen Heart.

The Boombox: hip-hop (10), r&b (10).

The Boot (10)

Complex (10): mostly rap (+ Haim).

Crave (20): they just show you a stack of album covers, not explicitly ordered.

Culture Trip (10): Polish jazz records; I'm rather surprised that only 3 were not previously on the list.

Drift (100): UK record store

Drowned in Sound (21..100)

Entertainment Weekly (10)

Exclaim (20 pop & rock): Exclaim splits their review section up according to genre, so there is no common category -- the pop & rock list is assumed to be the main one because it is for most other publications

Faster Louder [Australia] (50): 12 unlisted records, most likely local. Regular reviews have N/10 ratings, so we could follow them.

Glide (20): alpha, + 20HM (why not? 3 unlisted).

Gorilla vs Bear (40): 10 records not on file, many EPs, some on Bandcamp or DatPiff; Jai Paul's "leaked demos" (9) looks to be a description, not a title; little in common with other lists; top three: Autre Ne Veut, Danny Brown, Julianna Barwick.

Intro [Germany] (50): 6 records not on file, mostly titles auf Deutsch.

Jazz Journalists Association: individual top-ten (sometimes more) lists by members, most of whom vote in the Francis Davis poll. I decided the best way to track them is to expand code to three letters.

Jazzwise (20)

Juno Plus (25) [link]: 8 not on list, none higher than (8).

Laut [Germany] (25): metal (mostly).

Magnet (25): plus genre lists; jazz improv is aggressively avant.

Norman Records (50): UK record store; decided not to do the reissues list, mostly vinyl reissues not previously on file.

NPR (50): alpha sort, more or less; skipped a couple classical albums; 7 not in list (some may be classical, and the skips weren't in the list).

Oor [Netherlands] (30): 2 records not on file.

Piccadilly (100): UK record store.

PopMatters: genre lists dribbling out. The thing that strikes me about the "75 Best" list is how many were panned during the year, and therefore promoted here; also how many of those are really lousy records.

Pretty Much Amazing (40): top 10 alpha do all marked (10); after than they are numbered -- how hard is that?.

Resident (100): UK record store, + comps & reissues list.

Renowned for Sound (50): in alpha order.

Rock Sound (50): Couldn't get parts 2-3 so I have a 21-40 gap; 6 records off list from 41-50, but only 1 from 1-20 (an EP at 20).

Rough Trade (101): UK record store.

Sasha Frere-Jones (42): listed by released date, 3 records not on list, including a 2-CD Swans album, "hand made and assembled," and "sold out" already.

Sick Mouthy (20)

Spin (50) + metal.

Supajam (10)

Ted Gioia (100): dropped some (not all) classical; even so, 33 records not in list, although he's the first one so far to have my top-rated Billy Martin album.

Time (10) [link]: Douglas Wolk.

Timeout London (40)

Ultimate Classic Rock (10)

Washington Post (10): Chris Richards, mostly Americana, find is Lonnie Holley.

Wire (50): 9 not on list.
